In 1935 a central organization called Shomrei STa"M was created in Europe by eighty seven of the leading sages of the generation. They set for themselves a specific program, which was largely geared toward mass education of the buying public. Its goal was to organize the consumer and stop the avalanche of deception propagated by unauthentic sofrim. Unfortunately, before they could carry out their mission, their sacred work was cut short by the holocaust.
With the vision of continuing the work of the previous generation, the Vaad Mishmeres STa"M was established in the United States by HaRav Dovid Leib Greenfield shlit"a and HaRav Shmuel Granitstein shlit"a in 1975. Through various programs, the Vaad utilizes many public forums to spread their work.
HaRav Greenfield and HaRav Granitstein then took their tremendous work overseas. With the invitation of the Gedolei HaRabbonim, the Vaad was established in Eretz Yisrael in 1983 with HaRav Shmuel HaLevi Vozner zt"l later being appointed as its Nassi. Nearly eighty years since the seeds were planted in Europe, the Vaad continues to produce high-quality sofrim, serving the public with honesty and integrity.
The Badatz (Beis Din Tzedek) of the Eidah HaChareidis was established in 1919 by HaRav Yosef Chaim Zonnenfeld, zt"l and HaRav Yitzchok Yerucham Diskin zt"l. Known for the highest standard of its strict rabbinical supervision, all prospective sofrim must go through a rigorous testing process to become certified. After two lengthy written exams, the talmid is then tested orally by HaRav Mordechai Friedlander Shlit"a, Eretz Yisrael's leading posek in the field of STa"M, where he must also present a sample of his writing. The certification is then signed by three of the current members of the beis din tzedek.
