Checking and Batim Repair
Rav Avraham Yechezkel Lessin is a Baal Magiah, certified by the Vaad Mishmeres STa"M. He was trained by his Rebbi, HaRav Dovid Singer shlit"a, and then completed his shimush (apprenticeship) and testing with the Vaad.
The Training / Certification
After being trained by HaRav Singer shlit"a, Rav Lessin recorded many hours of shimush under the guidance of HaRav Hillel Wertheimer shlit"a of the Vaad Mishmeres STa"M. All participants are required to report to Bnei Brak on a weekly basis to sharpen their vision for checking STa"M in order to be properly trained to find even the smallest problems that commonly crop up in various forms of writing. After completing this apprenticeship, the student is then tested by a leading authority in the field of STa"M employed by the Vaad where they are required to answer with precision all questions pertaining to checking STa”M, to ensure utmost accuracy and professionalism.
The Shevet HaLevi (HaRav Shmuel HaLevi Vozner zt"l, Nassi of the Vaad Mishmeres STa"M and leading posek in Eretz Yisrael) writes in his shaylos and teshuvos (responsa 7:2:8) that computer checking for STa"M is a tremendous tool available to the public today, but is not a substitute for the trained human eye. Rather, when used in tandem, they allow for the most precise form of checking available today. Along with his trained eye, Rav Lessin also offers this unique form of checking, done through a special computer program, commonly known as a "Bedikat Machshev."
Through additional training under the supervision of HaRav Singer shlit"a, Rav Lessin also offers the service of any and all repairs needing to be done on the batim of the tefillin. Only one who has been trained to do so can open the bayis of the tefillin, check the parshios and close them properly. This requires several stages of gentle and precise sewing, sanding, and painting that result in the batim looking as good as new. Proper training is the crucial factor in being able to provide such a service on the highest level possible.
